In the kapa cloth-making process, 'ohe sticks were cut out to create designs that were then stamped with dye into intricate geometric patterns on the kapa.

Our Honu design from our 'Aumakua collection. For Hawaiians, 'aumakua are family or ancestral gods. Most 'aumakua had been humans during their life on earth, working, advising and serving as role models. After death their spirits dwelled in the 'aumakua realm where they were able to communicate with the living in dreams or visions, sometimes warning them of impending danger. In visible form they often appeared as animals such as the pueo (owl), mano (shark), puhi (eel) and honu (sea turtle).

    He'e Tee

The He'e or Octopus is probably the most intelligent of all invertabrates and have been shown to have the ability to learn from experience. They feed on crustaceans (shrimp, lobsters, crabs) and mollusks (primarily cowry snails). Their dens are often recognized by the pile of broken crab and snail shells found just outside the entrance. Early Hawaiians also relished he'e and captured them either by spearing or by using lures made of a large cowry shell lashed onto a hook, attracting the he'e with the movements of the lure. The He'e is also believed to be the embodiment of the Hawaiian god Kanaloa, god of the sea.

Our new multi-print tees feature our He'e design printed on the front and back. They are 100% pre-shrunk combed cotton jersey knit and are available in size Small thru 4XL. # HETBBD

    Kamehameha Kokoiki Tee

Kamehameha I, also known as Kamehameha the Great, unified the Hawaiian Islands and formally established the Kingdom of Hawai'i in 1810. He was born on the Kohala coast of Hawai'i Island. Hawaiian tradition tells that a bright star, Kokoiki, appeared just before the great conqueror was born. The date of the legend coincides with the appearance of Halley’s Comet in 1758. When Kokoiki was viewed by the kahuna, it was prophesied that a great leader was about to be born who would defeat all his rivals and reign supreme over all the islands. The infant prince was ordered to be put to death by King Alapai but was reared secretly and trained in the chiefly arts. He grew to manhood, taking the name Kamehameha, meaning “The Lonely One”

Our tees feature our original Kamehameha design printed on the front and our Na Makua logo on the back. They are 100% pre-shrunk jersey combed cotton knit and are available in size Small thru 4XL. # KITB

    Kūpe'e Tee

Kūpe'e are Nerrite Polita shells that are eaten, prized for lei, and used as an emblem of mourning. They are also used by hālau to hide (pe'e) knowledge or not used by other hālau so knowledge will not be hidden (pe'e) from them. Kūpe'e live under sand around boulders, and at night, they climb on boulders to feed on limu. Kūpe'e are gathered at night when they are feeding, preferably when there is little or no moon. They can "hear" noise and will fall off rocks to hide if disturbed by loud noises or talking.

The term kūpe'e is also used in hula to describe any garland that can be worn on the wrist or ankles. It is often worn by Hawaiian dancers and accentuates the movements of the hands. Some kupe`e create sounds that enhance the performance, and some are plants such as the laua`e fern that are known for their fragrant scent.

Our tees feature our original Kūpe'e design printed on the front and back of the tee. They are 100% pre-shrunk jersey cotton knit and are available in size Small thru 6XL. # KPTB

    Maunakea Tee

'O MAUNAKEA, KUAHIWI, KŪ HA'O I KA MĀLIE • Maunakea, Standing alone in the calm

In Hawaiian creation, the Earth Mother, Papahānaumoku, and the Sky Father, Wākea, created the Islands, with Hawai‘i Island being the first. Mauna Kea as their first born child, was therefore held in highest esteem. In our traditions, Mauna Kea is known as “Ka Mauna a Wākea - The Mountain of Wākea”, god of the heavens and father of Hawai‘i. Because Maunakea was the first-born child of Papa and Wākea, it is also considered the piko, or center of Hawai‘i, and a connecting point to the heavens.
