    Manu 'O'o Tee

The Manu 'Ō'ō was glossy black with yellowish tufts and plumes. It was valued by Hawaiians for its golden feathers, which were used to make feather capes, helmets and other ornaments for the ali'i. Bird catchers would smear sticky sap on the branches of the Ohi'a and when an 'Ō'ō landed on the sap it would be held fast in the sticky trap. The feathers were then carefully plucked, only removing a few at a time and then the bird was released unharmed. The Manu 'Ō'ō is now believed to be extinct, with it's last known sighting in 1934 on the slopes of Mauna Loa.

Our Nā Mākua Tees feature our new Manu 'Ō'ō design printed on the front and our Nā Mākua Logo on the back collar. They are 100% pre-shrunk jersey cotton knit and are available in size Small thru 4XL. # OOTB

    Kanaloa Tee

The He'e or octopus is believed to be one of the kinolau of the Hawaiian god of the sea, Kanaloa. The He'e is probably the most intelligent of all invertabrates and have been shown to have the ability to learn from experience. They feed on crustaceans (shrimp, lobsters, crabs) and mollusks (primarily cowry snails). Their dens are often recognized by the pile of broken crab and snail shells found just outside the entrance. Early Hawaiians also relished he'e and captured them either by spearing or by using lures made of a large cowry shell lashed onto a hook called Lu He'e, attracting the he'e with the movements of the lure.

Our tees feature our original Kanaloa design printed on the front and back of the tee. They are 100% pre-shrunk jersey cotton knit and are available in size Small thru 3XL. # KATR

    'Ama'u Tee

Huli ka lau o ka 'ama'u i uka, nui ka wai o kahawai • When the leaves of the 'ama'u turn towards the upland, it is a sign of a flood When the winds blow the leaves of the 'ama'u fern so that they bend toward the mountains it is also blowing clouds inland, which will produce rain. The 'Ama'u, a tree fern is one of the first species to colonize the barren lava flows that make Hawai'i Island so famous. This is an incredibly harsh landscape and many challenges must be overcome in order for it to persist. This does not seem to be an issue for the 'Ama'u. It is just as much at home in these water-starved habitats as it is in wetter forests. It is easily the most successful species of it's kind, having colonized every island in Hawai'i.

    Aku Tee

The Aku is perhaps the most delicious eating fish. Hawaiians ate the whole fish, from the head to the tail, eating it raw, dried, or cooked in an imu. Aku is a stout fish two to two and a half feet long, deep blue with deeper blue stripes. One of the best known traditional stories is that of the coming to Hawaii of Paʻao, a chief of “Kahiki.” He quarreled with his brother, Lonopele, who, by supernatural powers, sent storms after Paʻao. But a school of aku appeared, “and rose to the surface with a roaring sound,” and by swimming about calmed the water. Lonopele brought on a second storm which threatened to swamp the canoes, and again a school of fish appeared in response to prayers of Paʻao, this time the ʻopelu fish and the waters were made smooth again, and so Paʻao and his company arrived in Hawaii. To honor these two fish they were made kapu to Paʻao and his company, as well as kapu to all Hawaiians for a few months each year. The kapu protected these fish from overfishing and from being killed during their spawning seasons insuring their survival.

    Kalo Tee

The life of Kanaka Maoli is tied closely with kalo. Kalo is believed to have the greatest life force of all foods. According to the Kumulipo, the creation chant, kalo grew from the first-born son of Wakea (sky father) and Papa (earth mother), through Wakea's relationship with his daughter, Ho`ohokulani. Together they birthed a son named Haloanakalaukapalili, who was stillborn. He was buried and out of his body grew the kalo plant. They then had another son, healthy and strong, and he was also called Haloa, the namesake of his older brother. Haloa tended to his older brother, and the kalo grew abundantly. By Haloa's hand, the land became fertile. He was the first Hawaiian of whom all Hawaiian people are descended from.
