    Kanilehua 'I'iwi Notecard Collection - 4 Pack

Hilo i ka ua Kanilehua • Hilo of the Kanilehua rain. The Kanilehua rain, or the rain that patters in the lehua forest, is frequently referred to in the chants and songs of Hilo. Joining the famous Kanilehua rains in this design is the endangered 'I'iwi or Scarlet Hawaiian Honeycreeper. This is one of the most beautiful birds in Hawai'i. It uses its long, sickle-shaped beak to probe for nectar of the Ohi'a Lehua blossoms. The 'i'iwi was valued by Hawaiians for its red feathers, which were used to make feather capes, helmets and other ornaments for the alii, or chiefs. Bird catchers would smear sticky sap on the branches of the Ohi'a and when an 'i'iwi landed on the sap it would be held fast in the sticky trap.

    Hi'iakaikapoliopele Notecard Collection - 4 Pack

Hi'iaka i ka poli o Pele • Hi'iaka in the bosom of Pele.

In Hawaiian legend Hiʻiaka was conceived in Tahiti, but carried by Pele in the form of an egg to Hawaiʻi, until born here in Puna. From this, she earned her full name, Hiʻiaka-i-ka-poli-o-Pele: "Hiʻiaka in the bosom of Pele". Hiʻiaka was Pele's youngest and favorite sister, as well as the patron goddess of Hawaiʻi, hula dancers, chant, sorcery and medicine.

This design depicts the many aspects of Puna, home of Pele with the fragrance of the hala and lehua in the winds and the ongoing battle between the lava and the sea. inspired by a ‘ōlelo no‘eau about the Puna district. ” Hune one o Paia‘ala, ‘Āina Kilohana a ka Wahine,” which translates to, “The sands of Paia‘ala, now a revered prize land of Pele.”

    Hāpu'u Notecard Collection - 4 Pack

    Hāpu'u

The Hāpu'u or Hawaiian tree fern is very common here in Hawai'i and can grow up to heights of 40 ft . A fern frond begins as a curled up shoot. As it matures it unfurls - with each of the leafy fingers also unfurling in a true fractal form. Once the fern has matured it is a large frond on a rigid stem and provides ample shade. The Hāpu'u has been used in a number of ways, medicine, a famine food, and as the young shoots uncurl they have a fine golden hair that is very soft, almost like velvet. This hair is called pulu and it was collected in the 1800's and used commercially as stuffing for pillows and mattresses. The remnants of an old pulu factory can still be seen on the Napau Crater trail in the Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park.

Mahiole 'Elua Notecard Collection - 4 Pack

    Mahiole 'Elua

The Mahiole, woven of 'Ie'ie and covered with rare feathers or hulu were reserved exclusively for the use of the Ali‘i, symbolizing their chiefly divinity, rank and power. The construction of Mahiole required an incredible amount of labor and craftsmanship. Skilled trappers caught the birds by employing various techniques such as snaring their prey midair with nets, or using decoy birds to lure them onto branches coated with a sticky substance. They often harvested only a few feathers from each bird before releasing them back into the wild so they could produce more feathers. Skilled workers belonging to the aliʻi class crafted a framework of 'ie'ie and olonā as the foundation for the helmets & cloaks, onto which thousands of bundles of feathers were attached, creating powerful, bold designs.

    Laua'e Notecard Collection - 4 Pack

    Laua'e

The Laua'e fern is indigenous to Hawai'i. Hawaiians used laua'e for perfuming their kapa, adding it to the dyes before applying them to the pounded bark cloth. Laua'e is sometimes combined with pieces of Hala for lei makings. You can find this fern in moist rain forests as well as beside beaches. The leaves smell like maile and are often used for table decorations at a luau.
